January 15, 2013 in Los Angeles, Disney announced its new venture in the gaming market and it is called Disney Infinity. This release, a “Toy Box” is a platform composed of a plastic base with space for three pieces: two characters and a third one where players must place the scenario where they will interact.
With a concept similar to Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure, Infinity is an interesting product where toys “come to life” in a simulation environment and each figure has specific strengths and weaknesses. Before we talk more about Infinity, here are some facts about Skylanders:
- In the UK this franchise was the third best-selling series last year only behind FIFA and Call of Duty.
- In the same period, Skylanders grossed 500 million dollars in the U.S. alone. This value includes games, accessories and figures.
One of the most flashy facts of this release is that Infinity will combine Disney and Pixar characters in a simulation environment. I have played Skylanders and I know that even though I am not the target audience for this product (which “theoretically” are children), I quite liked the gameplay and experience of exchanging their figures to get bonuses according to the level and to be encouraged to explore the game universe with different powers dolls in order to have more benefits.
The Skylanders’ universe did not appeal to me as strong as to my girlfriend (owner of the copy of the game and a dying hard fan of Spyro). Now, given that Infinity will have scenarios and characters from Pixar animations beyond the vast and rapidly expanding universe of Disney, keeping in mind that MARVEL and Star Wars are also in the family, I am much more inclined to play the Disney Infinity rather than Skylanders.
Check out the launch trailer for Disney Infinity and tell us what you think and what character of Disney (or Pixar) you would like to play.
I highly recommend this other video below that details the very platform of Infinity and figures that comes in a Starter Kit which contains: Jack Sparrow (Pirates of Caribbean), Mr. Incredible (The Incredibles) and Sulley (Monsters Inc.).
The content of Disney Infinity Platform will be:
- An initial line of 40 collectible figures to expand your gaming experience.
- 17 pictures of characters.
- Disney Infinity Base
- Power Up Discs to put under your characters giving them special powers.
Disney Infinity is scheduled for release in June 2013 and will come out for XBox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, PC and mobile devices and Starter Kit is priced at U.S. $ 74.99.
